Babino Polje is the oldest and biggest small village
on the island Mljet. It is situated at the flank of the veliki I
mali grad mountain. Down the mountain village there is the fertile
valley which has given the name to the village. At the time of the
Dubrovnik Republic the prince of Mljet and his attendants lived
in Babino Polje. Nowadays the local government of Mljet, a post
office and a medical centre are situated in the village. Furthermore
a school was opened in 1867.Most of the inhabitants operate a farm
where olives, wine and vegetable are cultivated.A beautiful beach,
by name Sutmiholjska is located in a distance of 6 kilometres. Additionally
the well-known Odyssey grotto is only in a distance of 2 kilometres.
